Dear Amira…
Two years ago I met a princess!
You came into this world wide-eyed and screaming for attention (not much has changed). Your curiosity for all things around you has always driven you to learn, explore, discover and experience life.
Now, as we travel all over America talking to churches about what God wants us to do in Colombia, one of your favorite things is to go “bye-bye.” You like going to church, making new friends, checking out the nurseries, running around with the deacon kids and getting into trouble! đ
You love to talk! I think you take after your daddy on that one. When we pray and read the Bible as a family, you like to repeat what I say. It is super cute!
Anything to do with music is right up your alley. You like to jam out on the piano with Daddy, and we frequently hear you singing Jesus Loves Me, I’m in the Lord’s Army and the B-I-B-L-E, all on your own.
If it’s furry, slimy or fuzzy you always want to catch it and hold it. Yes, just like with your sweet mommy, animals draw you in like a magnet!
Some call you the bunny because of your affinity for hopping, jumping and skipping. It brings a smile to many faces. You’re a joy to be around.
We love you. Happy birthday my sweet Amira! Our princess. May you grow up and know Jesus like Daddy and Mommy, may you fall in love with Him and always desire to live for Him with all that you are.
Passion That Kills!
This week, I read another familiar story in Colombian news. Two rival soccer teams faced off, each determined to win. The game was close, the tension lasted until the last minute, and finally, one group emerged victorious…
…And then comes the rest of the story. Fans, filled with passion for their team’s cause, break out in violence. The loosing side is angry, the winning side is prideful and arrogant. Both are zealous.
As people leave the stadium, if one is seen wearing anything resembling the other team’s colors, their life is in danger. Rocks are cast, punches thrown, weapons are drawn and harsh words echo the streets surrounding the area. Riot police are called in and chaos breaks out. People die. People are hurt. Why? Because of passion.
This is exactly what happened on Sunday in MedellĂn Colombia. They ended up arresting over 350 people and confiscating 450 weapons. They really were prepared to break out in violence and passionate enough to kill! You can read the story here.
You know, we might read something like that and think, “My oh my, why are people so dumb about a silly game?!” But, if we would be honest with ourselves, we’d find that we are just as passionate sometimes. Our passion simply takes a different form–hunting, fishing, golf, football, shopping, video games, movies, technology, friends, etc… The list could go on and on.
In the Bible, Paul often spoke of passion, sometimes referred to as zeal. You know, he was a pretty passionate guy himself. Check out what he said in Philippians 3:
“Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:Â Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;Â Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.”
Philippians 3:4-6
He was the pick of the litter when it came to religion. He had all the right training, the right family, the right positions, the right everything… He was the at the top and he knew it. He was so passionate about his religion that he was willing to kill people for it! That’s why he persecuted the church! Zeal. A passion for the cause.
But then looks at what he says in the very next verses:
“But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;”
Philippians 3:7-10
Did you catch that? He said it was a loss to him! Paul came to the place where he realized that the things he was so passionate about were not drawing him close to God. In fact, they were unprofitable to him and Christ’s cause! He laid it aside in order to win Christ.
You know, we need some Christians that would be willing to do that. We get so tied up in this world and all of its many pleasures and pastimes that we are loosing Christ. It should be the other way around! Let us, the Children of God, determine to be passionate about HIM! More than anything else, HE will be my zeal. HE will be the driving force of energy that keeps me going each day. HE will be my goal, my prize, my life! HE will be my everything!
We might think the Colombian soccer fans may seem a little overzealous in their cause. When is the last time somebody accused you of being overzealous for Christ? They had a passion willing to kill another person. Let us get a passion for the Lord that would be willing to kill our own will and die to self. That’s the right passion. That’s the right zeal.
Die to self. Live unto Him.
Lets get ahold of a passion that kills.
Raising A Child On The Road (Video)
A few years ago I had all the answers. If you asked, I could probably give some [pretty good] advice on being a great spouse, raising practically perfect children, preaching fantastic sermons, and whatever else you’d like to throw my way. I even had Bible verses for all that!
But the old saying I’ve heard said a thousand times now rings true in my life…
“The older I get, the less I know!”
Marriage, ministry, raising children and life in general takes hard work, tireless determination and God’s grace. It is easy to talk about and hard to do.
I remember countless times seeing THATÂ child at Walmart (you know who I’m talking about!) and thinking… “That will never happen with my kids.” You know, the boy who whines, screams and openly rebels against his parents. The girl who gets what she wants, when she wants, and how she wants it… or else. The kid that is nothing less than a brat.
Well, guess what… God has blessed me with a wife and a munchkin of my own! Suddenly, I realized things really aren’t as easy as I had supposed. Just this week we were at the store and in a moment which snuck up on me like a tiger on its prey, I was that parent with that kid.
And you know what? The more I am blessed to lead a family, the more I realize something… we desperately need God’s presence in each of our lives! You see, no matter how much discipline, structure, schedule and consistency we have in our parenting, it is human nature to rebel. We are born in iniquity and foolishness, and without God’s grace we will continue in that same rebellion until our last breath.
Aubrie and I hope to raise children that fear the Lord, respect his Word, and enjoy serving him. But above all else we want to see them individually submit themselves to God’s loving hand when they understand their need of his salvation. That is why we try our best to have family devotion time. This has been one of the hardest things to keep regular and consistent in while traveling on the road, but the need for us all to meditate on God’s Word and commune with him in prayer is paramount. They need the Word of God. I need the Word of God.
Raising a child while on the road has its challenges. We’re blessed that [as of right now] Amira loves to travel. Going “bye-bye” is one of her favorite things to do! Spending hours in the car going from one meeting to the next is still something fun for her. It’s hard to believe she’ll be two this month, and it’s hard to believe that in just over 2 months we’ll meet her baby sister (who is still unnamed, by the way). With the Lord’s help we hope to live by the principle found in Proverbs 22:6
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
How do you and your family do devotion time together? What advice do you have and what challenges do you face? Leave your answer in the comments… I’d love to hear from you!
Here’s a recent video of us reading through a chapter in proverbs together as a family. Amira likes to repeat the phrases sometimes, it really is cute. We love you guys! Thanks for following us and for your prayers.
Missionaries Burning Rubber
Saturday we will hop in our van and start one of our busiest stretches of deputation yet. We’ll be in at least 18 churches and 11 states during the month of February (that is an average of over 4 per week!), travelling around 4-5 thousand miles, preaching, presenting our burden for Colombia, meeting fellow believers, and hopefully establishing new partnerships that will get us even closer to reaching Colombia. Here is a map to give you an idea of the travelling we’ll be doing:
Thank you so much for your prayers. I’ll be honest, deputation has been one of the best times of our lives. We have enjoyed seeing our beautiful country, spending time with each other as a family, getting to preach all over the place, and seeing God do mighty things in our lives. I can honestly say, it has been awesome!

January 2012
Dear Pastors, Friends and Family,
Deputation & Family Update
We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! The past couple months have been a whirlwind of traveling, preaching, sharing our burden for Colombia and seeing God do miracles. Weâve seen people saved through personal soul winning and in church services, and weâve seen major financial needs met by Godâs mighty providence. He is GOOD!
Weâve now traveled a total of over 31,000 miles and have gained several new supporters recently, even three this past week! Praise God. If you havenât joined our team of financial partners weâd love to be your missionaries to Colombia! Millions have still never heard. Will you help us get there? By the way, if you havenât seen our ministry video yet, check it out on our website: www.bemagnified.org or contact me and I can mail you a DVD copy.
We had asked prayer for Hells Gates, a program our home church did during October. It was incredible! 3,500 people walked through a reality drama of the end times, and over 400 came to know Christ as their Savior! We also participated in two conferences that promote missions in which many gave their lives for full time Christian service. I love this stuff!
Our pregnancy is going well, and the doctor just informed us last week that weâre having another GIRL! Iâm quickly being outnumbered, but we thank Christ for entrusting us with another little child to raise.
Out Of The Mouth Of Babes
Amira, who is now 21 months old, absolutely loves to sing. She gets a couple of things mixed up but it sure is cute! We frequently hear her joyfully sing: âI.B.I.B.I.B…book and me… BIBLE!â or, another favorite: âJesus loves me, little star, how I wonder, up above Jesus.ââș
Colombian Culture Corner
If you ever want to say âGod bless youâ to a Spanish-speaking person, just say, âQue Dios le bendiga.â (Pronounced: kay dee-OHS lay ben-DEE-gah)
Prayer Requests
1. Aubrieâs pregnancy â Baby girl due on May 24th
2. That we would be a blessing to churches as we travel & present our ministry
3. The 44,000,000 Colombian people who have never heard the Gospel!
4. Financial Support (now at about 20%)
Thank you for your continued prayers and support. We love you and pray for you often.
Servants of the King,
Aaron, Aubrie, Amira (& Baby) Vance
