Paying The Price In Bogota

It’s amazing the things you’ll do for something (or someone) you love!

Today we arrived in Bogotá, which is the capital city of Colombia with a metro population of over around 8,500,000 people. It’s huge. Really huge. This city is very high too, at about 8,600 feet above sea level, and it’s a bit colder too, compared to the other cities we’ve visited.

Well, being a larger city, and being the capital, there are quite a few more american stores and restaurants here. It’s crazy how much you can miss something that’s familiar after not having it available for a couple of weeks.

Well, my wife mentioned going to eat dinner at one of these places. And, since I liked that particular place, and I love my wife, we decided to set out on a grand trek to find it. A map said it was only about 20 blocks away. It would be a nice little walk.

Then it started to rain.

And rain.

And rain.

And rain.

Then it even started hailing.

Then we found an umbrella. Too late, maybe? lol

Needless to say, we were entirely drenched. Completely wet. Soaked to the core. You get the idea….

But when we found it (inside of a mall, of all places) it was oh, so good. Worth every drop of rain dripping from our noses; every sopping step we took; every shiver in the cold and wet breeze.

We found our Taco Bell. Yum. We were willing to pay the price!

Taco Bell has never tasted better!

Sometimes I wonder if we’re willing to pay the price for other things too. A wise man once told me, “Aaron, people always do what they want to do.” How true is that! If somebody really wants something, they’ll find a way.

This is a big city. The need is so great, not only here in Colombia but around the entire world. But are we willing to pay the price? It might be difficult, yes. But we have the power of an almighty God on our side. He has commanded us to go, but we as Christians have not gone.

Has there been anything in your life that’s been easy to pay the price for, yet other things are just so hard?

I know it’s been that way for me. Would to God that we could take a stand, live for the Lord, do what’s right and reach the world. We need His power and strength.

So, people always find a way to do what they want to do. What do you want to do?

Broken Hearts In Bucaramanga

He didn’t even lift his head.

As I squatted down next to him and tried to speak kind words, he heard a slight jingle and slowly opened his hand and pointed it upward. The coins that dropped into his grasp, one of them falling to the ground, didn’t even total a dollar, but it was more than he had seen all day.

Then, I slipped a pamphlet out of my pocket and into his hand. “Good news,” I told him. “Maybe a friend can read this to you. It’s a message from the Bible and from a God that loves you.”

He barely acknowledged me.

The smell of alcohol was so strong. Local businesspeople sneered as they looked on with disgust. Why would I waste such a thing? The money, yes, would probably be used for something that would worsen his situation. I wasn’t sure how he would respond, but I couldn’t just walk by. The fact is, I had already walked by several just like him.

People walked by him all day. Hoards of people walked by him. It’s so easy to write this man off as just another waste of space in our society.

But, how long had he been sitting here?

Where does he call home?

Has he been like this his whole life?

How did this situation start?

What does he live for?

Doesn’t he have anybody that loves him?

Family?

Friends?

Fellow citizens?

…Me?

These questions filled my mind all day and my heart has been broken. Tears swell up in my eyes even as I write.

The truth is, people are desperate. It might not always manifest itself like it did in this man’s life, but people have no hope.

They need hope.

We all need hope. We have a void that must be filled.

Some fill that void with religion, but its hope is empty.

Some fill that void with possessions, but its hope is empty.

Some fill that void with bodily pleasure, but its hope is empty.

And some give up. The void remains empty. There is no hope. Why even try?

But Christ, through his mercy, gives us a perfect hope. I love Romans 15:13 that says:

“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”

That’s what makes us different. That’s why we can have hope. It’s because our hope comes from the God of hope.

And we keep it to ourselves?

What about the rest of the world?

Are we going to hoard our hope, when Christ died for all?

Our hearts have been broken here. I have been begging God to show me how to best make a difference in this country and in the world. I need his help.

Courage to speak.

Guts to act.

Willingness to be used.

Our hearts are broken.

Is yours?

There’s Nothing Like A Good Bath!

Have you ever been so dirty that you felt like you’d do just about anything for a good bath?

That was the case of our Toyota Matrix after a wonderful trip to Ohio and back over Christmas. The top picture really doesn’t do justice to the amount of cake-frosting-like-salt that was pasted all over our poor car. It got so bad that we’d have to stop every 100 miles to clean the windshield and windows just to see. And since it was below freezing when we returned to Georgia, it was several days before I could find an open car wash to clean off all the grime and junk that had built up.

But when bath time came, I think I almost heard my car breathe a sigh of deep relief and joy. Really.

OK, maybe not the car. It was probably me.

Anyways, it got me to thinking. You know, we need baths too. Life is dirty. We live in a dirty world. We’re heading to Heaven but the road there is covered in things that hinder our view, drag us down and make us feel filthy. Here are a few thoughts about this.

1. Christ Wants Us Clean

I think that’s why Paul said in Ephesians:

“…Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:25b-27

Just as I couldn’t wait to get my car cleaned off of the build-up of junk on the outside, Christ gave himself to clean us by the washing of water by the word. This is an interesting concept. Cleansed by his word? Well just think… His word was powerful enough to create the universe… don’t you think it would be sufficient to wash me and you of every spot, wrinkle and blemish? And he wants to clean us just to be able to present us back to himself as holy and without blemish!

2. We Cannot Clean Ourselves

If my car would have cleaned itself, it sure would have saved me a lot of trouble. I had to find a car wash, fork out money to pay for it, and invest time that could be spent somewhere else… But I wanted a clean car. It was worth it. That’s why Christ gave himself for us. He laid down his own life on the cross to pay for our dirty sin. He died to rescue us from a life of filth! Now, it is with the washing of the water (the Holy Spirit) by the Word (Jesus Christ) that we’re made spotless.

3. It’s A Process

In the car wash there were 7 or 8 stages. (I opted for the “Ultimate Wash.” 😉 ) Each stage peeled back another layer of dirt. Each stage was important in itself but near worthless if done alone. I think we have the wrong idea about Spiritual Cleanliness. The Christian might study the Word of God once after messing up thinking, “Good, now I’m clean!” but it’s a process! You have to dwell in his word. The reason sin builds up in our life is because we don’t dwell in his word. We don’t spend enough time with him for him to be able to do his work of cleansing. I could have quickly sped through the car wash but it wouldn’t have effectively cleaned my car. It’s a process.

4. We Must Be Washed Often

I washed my car less than 24 hours ago. It’s already dirty again. It needs to be constantly washed. The same with us, we must constantly return to the Water by the Word for a fresh cleaning. One time won’t do it. That’s why I take a shower every day. If not, my wife and I might be having some problems. How often do you submit yourself for a spiritual bath by the Lord and his Word?

There’s nothing like a good bath!

Merry [Belated] Christmas!

God has been so good to us this year! We’ve been blessed in so many ways. New additions to our home (isn’t she cute?), growth in our ministry, and open doors for new opportunities… (more on that later). The Lord has taken care of every need, taught us new things and poured out his amazing love and goodness on us. Our cup really is running over!!

We just got back from spending Christmas with Aubrie’s family up in Ohio last week. They really are a blessing to me. I couldn’t ask for better In-laws! We enjoyed seeing lots of snow the entire time (for a Georgia boy: Lots of snow=3 inches! lol), remembering the Christmas story, exchanging gifts and eating [probably] a little too much amazing food.

The road home late Sunday and early Monday morning was a bit rough but God kept us protected the entire time. Just like I told Aubrie, I’m pretty sure that if I have a guardian angel, he’s probably a little overworked.  🙂

Thanks for being part of our lives. Thanks for taking the time to keep up with our lives and ministry. Thanks for praying. We really need it.

May God bless you and your family this upcoming year with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus our Lord!

“Forget Not All His Benefits!”

“Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:1-5

God is so good, isn’t he? I wanted to take this time to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving! Never forget the wonderful benefits & blessings that God almighty has bestowed upon you. May he continually receive all praise, honor and glory!!
